Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Kid
I couldn’t stop laughing out loud while I was reading this book. It didn’t help that me reading a paperback Children’s book was already rather funny sight. I got quite a few curious and judgemental looks. I guess I made their day today too by making them smile. Right?
Anyways, this wimpy kid is too amazing. Did I tell you that I like to identify with the characters of the books I read? Well, now I know why a friend in college used to call me goofy. It could be because I had a folder with a pic of Goofy on it (I repeat, in college). But I think he was hinting at the obvious.
The boy is jinxed. Or is he so bad at observing and planning? I do not know. I have a feeling many can identify with his kind of experiences in middle school. You are not much of a planner, but you try to quick plan something and it totally backfires. This book is full of such experiences.
In school, we do try and experiment a lot. The lessons we learn from those, ultimately help carve our character and future behaviors. I think middle school scars most people. Mine wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t too great either. I had my share of bullies too. In some ways, I still do, I guess.
How about you? What were you like in middle school? Was it fun?
I don't know. I did read a couple of Wimpy Kid books because I have to advise my students on what to read and also to show them how different authors write. But I found the books too depressing and could not in clear conscience say I wanted my students to be exposed to that. I know happy endings are a myth but I feel there is time enough when children are a little older for them to encounter that. Here even the endings of the books were full of despair.
ReplyDeleteI have read the second part also now and I understand where you are coming from. My kids were reading them when they were in middle school. I had not read them at that point. In fact, I am now reading their copies. I feel it did make them feel less alone while going through their middle school issues though.
DeleteSomehow I've never been drawn to these books. But you seemed to have enjoyed it. I'll try out one as soon as I get some free time.
ReplyDeleteIt's a quick read. It is funny and at the same time it imparts wisdom of sorts. I didn't enjoy book 2 as much as book 1 though.
DeleteI have never read this book series. Maybe my almost middle schooler would like to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteDuring my school days, I was a bold kid. I didn't care about how I appeared, what others thought about me, if I was popular, etc. I was absolutely fearless - the quality which I slowly lost!
I was like that too. But even then there are people and comments that intentionally(but are sugar coated) are meant to hurt you because of that fearlessness. I didn't know it back then, now I look back and think of all the things I missed because of such manipulations. Middle and High school years are crucial to a person's core development.
